A singing champion. This is how this talented and beautiful lady from Cebu, Philippines started her career at a very young
age. She became a folk singer and later on joined a show band top billed by Boy Camara, which made her travel not only in
the country but all over the world. In 1989, Jo decided to try her luck in Manila, with only her talent in her pocket. She
started singing back-ups for named artists, one of them Randy Santiago who was then the "Concert King". Jo's exposure
with Randy made her overflowing talent very evident was the start of her following which inspired her more to go solo.
COSMO BAR the leading music lounge in those days finally knocked at her door and started her rise to stardom. Her heartfelt
and soulful renditions combined with charm made her the "Queen Of Lounge".
BMG, a leading record company signed her up immediately to become the first artist in a digitally recorded album. They
released songs "I LOVE TO SING" for local distributions and "COLORS OF LOVE" with other Asian Superstars
for the International market. These two albums gave Jo a nomination for "Best Female Artist" in Awit Awards, a prestigious
music award-giving body in the country.
Her fame spread in the US and the success of her shows paved the way for her performances in the longest running live
show at the famous Cache Creek Casino Resort in Capay Valley, CA
She performed side by side with Las Vegas famed groups like JINAN ACROBATS OF CHINA, LOS HUINCAS GAUCHOS, ARGENTINIAN
GAUCHOS and CHARLIE FRYE & Company. Bruce Turgon, a former member of FOREIGNERS BAND, directed the show.
With just "4 feet and no inches at all" as she professes how tall she is, is not all that matters. Her oozing
talent, determination and passion for her craft made Jo Awayan the total performer she is now. Jo Awayan is considered one
of the best Filipino artists.
